Verywell creates wellness review board to verify content – Media News – MM + M

The Verywell health and wellness website applies the same review process to its lifestyle and wellness content as it does to its medical content.

Many health sites have medical review boards, doctors, and experts who make sure stories are medically correct, but fewer apply the same rigor to content on wellness, diet, exercise. and the way of life.

Verywell has established a wellness review committee which includes subject matter experts such as dietitian, personal trainer, running trainer, yoga instructor and psychotherapist to check its wellness content.

“The wellness landscape in general can be difficult to navigate; there are so many mixed messages when it comes to diet and exercise, and it’s hard to know what’s credible and what’s backed by science, ”said Rachel Berman, CEO of Verywell. “We wanted to make sure our wellness content around diet, exercise, mental health and parenting was up to the same standards we have with condition-based medical content.”

While wellness content often touches on health topics, like the best diet for people with diabetes, Berman said it wouldn’t make sense for a doctor to review the recipes. However, these articles also need to be science-based, and that’s where wellness counseling comes in.

Verywell Editorial Director Emily Rose said adding an expert review process can lend credibility to content from wellness influencers.

“Healthy food and exercise bloggers and influencers are good on Instagram and can be persuasive on the topic, but they’re not experts,” Rose said. “We want to make sure the experts are always part of the conversation. “

Berman added that wellness content is not verified the same way on all health websites. Most credible health portals will speak to an expert or influencer for wellness stories, but there is often not an extra layer of independent expert review before putting them online.

“[The board] will further improve our voice and what we market as being very credible throughout Verywell, not just medical and condition-based content, ”Berman said. “Another thing these experts add is that they have experience. It is not just a young person researching the subject and writing about facts he finds on the Internet. We add that layer of credibility on the part of someone who may have just seen a patient struggling with a diabetes diet. It adds a sense of relationship which is very true for Verywell.

Verywell, which has around 40 million monthly users, according to Comscore, has three wellness websites: Verywell Fit, Verywell Mind, and Verywell Family, as well as state-driven property Verywell Health. Wellness content ranges from diet and exercise to mindfulness and stress, pregnancy and parenthood.
